This course is a 27-hour advanced home study course to utilize DN in clinical practice and is open to Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Chiropractors, Physicians, Nurses, Physician’s Assistants and Athletic Trainers. Licensed Physical Therapist Assistants and Occupational Assistants may also take the course if DN is within the scope of practice in that state.
This course is designed to enhance and expand upon the foundational principles offered in our 27-hour Level I course, Introduction to Dry Needling. While this course is still designed to place heavy emphasis on practical, hands-on training and practice, the attendee will be introduced to more detail of current research regarding DN efficacy, physiological effects, controversies and potential adverse effects. Peripheral and central sensitization issues will be discussed. The participant will be familiarized not only with HOW to needle but also WHAT functional outcomes may be influenced by needling, which is WHY we needle. As always, an emphasis will be placed on patient and clinician safety and proper handling of potential blood-borne pathogens. While many of the tissues covered in the Level One course were larger and more common clinically encountered muscle groups, more complex anatomical regions such as the face, hand and foot intrinsics will be taught in Level II. Relevant regional and three-dimensional anatomy (utilizing state-of-the-art software programs) as well as pathophysiology of common disorders will be covered as the course progresses.
Level II also dedicates more time of DN beyond trigger point techniques to other soft tissue applications in musculotendinous, tenoperiosteal and ligamentous tissues. The art of “needle palpation” will be emphasized, allowing the participant to correctly distinguish between normal and abnormal tissue in different body types. Pre and post DN functional assessments will be included. Prior to post-course proficiency testing, multiple case studies will be presented. Each attendee will be expected to practice DN on a lab partner they secure (lab partners are not provided by Master Dry Needling). Therefore, we strongly advise taking the course together with another needling clinician. Pregnant females are not allowed to be chosen as lab partners by participants.
The course is designed to be completed in 3 days (if so desired), similar to our live, 3-day course. If the participant chooses not to do so they have one year to complete the course in order to receive CEUs.
Review all materials from prior Dry Needling course work.
Review neuromusculoskeletal anatomy around all major joints with a 3-D anatomy app. We highly recommend Human Anatomy Atlas by Visible Body because any practice drawings made when reviewing anatomy may be retained when the skin is replaced on the model so as to visualize topographical placement of the drawings.
ou must secure a volunteer to allow you to practice all techniques. This person cannot be pregnant. We strongly urge you to complete the course with another needling clinician to gain valuable feedback information!
The manual and presentation handouts will be emailed to you after you pay for the class. Please review.
It is your responsibility to provide all necessary needling supplies (as you have been needling already).
By the end of the course the participants will be able to -
Have a more thorough knowledge of pneumothorax and other adverse side effects and how to utilize techniques to minimize their occurrence.
Discuss controversial professional issues regarding DN interventions.
Properly handle potential blood-borne pathogens and OSHA compliance.
Apply pre and post DN functional outcome testing.
Identify muscle attachments and ligaments in and around all major joints by surface anatomy and muscle testing.
Apply advanced needling techniques to the spine, cervicocraniofacial, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, trunk, hip, sacrum, knee, ankle and foot regions.
Understand peripheral and central sensitization issues.
Utilize the 7 Steps of Master Dry Needling in patient evaluation and case management.
Apply advanced scar tissue treatment techniques.
Properly insert needles into each tissue identified including depth and angle of penetration.
Understand absolute and relative contraindications to DN therapy.
Identify type of normal and abnormal tissue encountered at the end of a needle using “needle palpation.”
Utilize the different needling techniques performed across the field.
Discuss and apply electrical stimulation to inserted needles.
Administer diagnosis-specific techniques such as carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar fascitis, bell's palsy, radiculopathy, epicondylitis, etc.
