Course Description

This course is a three-day introductory home study course to utilize DN in clinical practice and is open to Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Chiropractors, Physicians, Nurses, Physician’s Assistants and Athletic Trainers. It will begin with a history of dry needling and its contrast and comparison to acupuncture.

This course IS NOT an acupuncture course. We will review relevant regional and three-dimensional anatomy as well as pathophysiology of common disorders as the course progresses. It will cover the use of DN techniques in trigger points, myofascial pain syndromes and its use in musculoskeletal injuries and disorders. Also included will be musculotendinous, tenoperiosteal and ligamentous applications.

An introduction will be given of the three foundations of Master Dry Needling: Myofascial Pain & Trigger Points, Autonomic nervous system and Total Motion Release. A spreadsheet will be provided so each participant can track the changes that happen in the volunteer receiving needling. Master Dry Needling employs a 7-Step process to aid in identifying, scoring, treating and case management. Each participant will be taught how to utilize this process in a safe and effective manner.

Safety is emphasized throughout the course. Specific review is afforded not only in OSHA's blood-born pathogen and needle handling parameters but in safety around organs and neurovasculature as well. Specific time will be given to pneumothorax and other adverse effects as well as informed consent and how to present it. Safety and the proper handling of potential blood borne pathogens associated with DN applications will be emphasized. The course is designed to place heavy emphasis on practical, hands-on practice. Each participant will be required to practice all needling techniques on a willing lab partner. Each participant must understand it is their responsibility to provide their own lab partners. Participants will review clinical anatomy and practice DN treatment of each tissue and region covered throughout the course. Pregnant females are not allowed to take the course. The art of “needle palpation” will be covered and emphasized. This includes identifying different subdermal tissues as the tip of the needle advances into the body including normal and abnormal muscle tissue, scar tissue, ligaments, tendons, musculotendinous junction, adipose and periosteum.

  • Course materials are emailed to each participant upon payment for the course. 3-D Anatomy apps will be suggested, and participants will be responsible to purchase their own app.

  • Each participant must find his or her own willing lab partners to practice DN techniques on. They do not have to be the same person for the entire course.

  • The course materials, including course manuals, presentations and streaming training videos will be permanently available to each participant.

  • Links for needling supplies will be provided; however, each participant must buy the necessary needling supplies for the course. They are free, of course, to purchase these supplies from wherever they wish.

Participants will be required to have the system requirements to access course materials.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course the participants will be able to -

  • Have a thorough understanding of DN history and clinical applications.

  • Understand normal and abnormal muscle contraction physiology.

  • Identify precipitating and perpetuating factors in trigger point (TP) syndromes.

  • Identify muscle attachments and trigger points by surface anatomy and muscle testing.

  • Identify ligamentous and tenoperiosteal tissues by surface anatomy.

  • Properly and safely insert needles into each tissue identified including depth and angle of penetration.

  • Understand and apply Master Dry Needling concepts into treatment.

  • Understand absolute and relative contraindications to DN therapy.

  • Identify type of tissue encountered at the end of a needle using “needle palpation.”

  • How to utilize different needling techniques depending on the response of each patient.

  • Effectively needle the cervical, thoracic, and lower extremity regions to treat pain and muscle dysfunction.

  • Apply TMR and neural therapy techniques alongside dry needling for improved clinical outcomes.

  • Reinforce techniques and troubleshoot challenges through hands-on practice and group discussion.

  • Perform dry needling on the posterior hip and thoracolumbar region for musculoskeletal dysfunction.

  • Effectively insert needles and palpate trigger points for myofascial pain management.

  • Differentiate dry needling from acupuncture and discuss its clinical evolution.
